Born in Dieppe, Abraham, marquis Duquesne, after having served in sweden, returned to France and distinguished himself as a naval officer, notably against the Dutch in the Mediterranean, gaining a number of victories over Dutch admiral Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter (Stromboli, 1675; Augusta, 1676) and against the Barbary pirates (Tripoli, 1681; Algiers, 1682). He was one of the few Protestants spared by the revocation of the edict of nantes, which had upheld religious toleration.
